LBJ, in the critical year 1963, signs for a Democratic National Committeewoman from Rhode Island

Lyndon Baines Johnson, 1908-1973. 36th President of the United States, 1963-1969.  Autograph sentiment boldly signed Best wishes / Lyndon B. Johnson as Vice President.

Johnson has signed the envelope accompanies invitation to attend a reception at the Johnsons' home, “The Elms,” in northwest Washington, D.C.  The envelope dates from 1963, the year Johnson acceded to the presidency following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

The accompanying engraved invitation bears the gold-embossed vice presidential seal.  It bears the printed names of “The Vice President and Mrs. Johnson,” but LBJ's name has been stricken out and the text amended with a handwritten change to reflect that only Lady Bird issued the invitation.  The date is Saturday, January 19—which, during Johnson's vice presidential years, was 1963.  The invitation is to Annette Cusson, a Democratic Party National Committeewoman from Warwick, Rhode Island.

Johnson returned to The Elms, a gated, chateau-style mansion, following Kennedy's assassination on November 22, 1963.  Built in 1929, it has 10 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms, and a total of 9,116 square feet.  “Every time somebody calls it a chateau,” Johnson joked, “I lose 50,000 votes back in Texas."  The Elms is now the residence of the Syrian ambassador to the United States.

Johnson has signed in green ballpoint with an almost 3" signature.  The tail of the “J" touches a letter in Cusson's name. The envelope and invitation are slightly toned from prior framing, and both have mounting remnants on the back.  Both pieces are in fine condition.

Unframed.  Please click here for information about custom framing this piece.
